About Natural Stearic Acid

Stearic acid is obtained from fats and oils by the saponification of the triglycerides using hot water (about 100C). The resulting mixture is then distilled. It belongs to a polar head group[ that can be attached to metal cations and a non polar chain that confers solubility in organic solvents. Widely used for production of soaps, detergents and cosmetic products such as shampoo and shaving products. It is also used in fireworks for coating iron and aluminium as it prevents oxidation which ensures compositions to be stored for a longer period of time.
